ABOUT SONY AND THE SONY MOBILE PHONESony mobile phones should actually be referred to as Sony Ericsson mobile phones, as Sony themselves have stopped making phones as an individual company. The Sony Ericsson brand is a joint venture between Sony, the Japanese Electronics Company and Ericsson a Swedish telecoms company. They started the mobile phone joint venture back in 2001 after Ericsson ran into significant problems with their manufacturing caused by a fire in a supplier facility in Mexico. However it was no dream partnership as they were unable to turn a profit in their early days, in fact it wasn’t until 2003 that they recorded their first quarterly profit. Since this time while they have encountered problems like any other mobile phone manufacturing company, they have gone from strength to strength. Sony mobile phones are now a household name and brands such as the “Cyber Shot” and “Walkman” phones have been a great success allowing them to achieve sales of over 96 million units in 2008. |
